Firefighters rescued 7 motorists after storms deluge west Aurora on Saturday

AURORA | Aurora firefighters were called to rescue at least seven stranded motorists, primarily near Overland High School, caught in flooding after a deluge storm Saturday afternoon, according to Aurora Fire and Rescue.

“Around 2:30 pm, as severe storms moved through Aurora, Aurora firefighters responded to more than 15 emergency 9-1-1 calls, including reports of vehicles stuck in flooded roadways with people trapped inside and homes flooding,” fire officials said in a statement.

Aurora Fire Rescue spokesperson Eric Hurst said most of the calls and flooding occurred at about 3 p.m. between south Dayton and Potomac streets and east Iliff and east Mississippi avenues.

“There was one location outlier with street flooding and a stranded vehicle at Iliff and (South Idalia Street) that Ladder 9 found and reported,” Hurst said.

First-floor offices at the 2600 South Parker Road complex experienced some flooding, including the offices of Sentinel Colorado.

No injuries were reported from any of the flooding incidents, but some power lines in the area were either knocked down or were arcing from fallen tree limbs.

Aurora Fire Rescue officials offer this advice to residents and motorists during storms:

      • Never drive through floodwaters or flooded roadways and intersections.

      • 6 inches of standing or moving water can be enough to cause you to lose control of your vehicle.

      • Floodwaters can contain debris and downed power lines, which can be extremely hazardous.

      • “Turn Around, Don’t Drown.” Water can be deeper than it appears. Don’t take a chance, instead find a safe alternate route.
