AURORA | A two-alarm apartment fire in central Aurora Monday afternoon caused major damage to six apartment units, forcing about 50 residents from their homes and prompted the rescue of several pets, according to Aurora Fire Rescue officials.

Numerous people called 911 at about 2:30 p.m. to report that there was a fire at an apartment complex at 16203 E. Alameda Place, part of the Greensview apartment complex.

Callers and firefighters arriving said heavy smoke was visible, even from miles away.

“Firefighters aggressively worked inside and outside the building to search for occupants and bring the fire under control,” Aurora Fire Rescue spokesperson Eric Hurst said in a statement. “Hot outside temperatures made the operation especially challenging.”

Firefighters searched the buildings, finding they were clear of people.

There were no injuries reported, Hurst said, including among a bevy of cats, dogs, turtles and even a pet snake that were rescued.

The blaze affected 24 apartments and forced about 50 people from their homes, all assisted by the American Red Cross, officials said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, Hurst said.
