AURORA | A unidentified 32-year-old man faces drunken driving and other charges after crashing into a police car rushing to a call at a local middle school Tuesday afternoon.

Police said two officers were en route to Prairie Middle School in west Aurora at about 4 p.m. running both lights and sirens after school officials reported a fight during school dismissal.

The patrol car was northbound on South Peoria Street when it was struck in the intersection of East Yale Avenue by car that was westbound on Yale, Aurora police spokesperson Joe Moylan said in a statement.

The impact caused the patrol car to roll over on its side and onto two cars in the double-left-turn lane on Peoria, Moylan said.

“The driver of the suspect vehicle attempted to drive away from the scene, but was contacted by officers on Yale Avenue, about one block from the crash,” Moylan said.

The officers received minor injuries and were taken to a nearby hospital.

The driver of the car was also taken to a nearby hospital for treatment of what appeared to be minor injuries.

Once the man is medically cleared, he will be arrested and faces charges of drunken driving, leaving the scene of a crash and failing to yield to an emergency vehicle, Moylan said.
