AURORA | Fast action from a neighbor who spotted smoke from a nearby home brought firefighters to the scene fast, although a dog and cat home alone in the house were injured, according to Aurora fire officials.

The neighbor called 911 at 4:49 p.m. after noticing smoke coming from a window of the home in the 600 block of South Troy Street. They then saw flames through a window, according to Aurora Fire Rescue spokesperson Eric Hurst.

Firefighters arrived a few minutes after the call and found heavy smoke pouring from the front door as Aurora police officers attempted to get inside and search the two-level house.

Firefighters reported the fire under control at 5:01 p.m., just minutes after the call was received, Hurst said. Additional crews searched the home amid heavy smoke and confirmed that no people were inside.

One dog was rescued from the second floor and taken from the home by ladder. A cat also was rescued. Aurora police took both animals to an animal hospital. The dog was in critical condition, while the cat was expected to be OK, fire officials said.

No people were home nor injured.

The fire caused major fire and water damage to the main level of the home and smoke damage throughout, Hurst said.

The three displaced adults are being assisted by the American Red Cross.
