Aurora cops credit Flock system with high school shooting arrest after 18 minutes
AURORA | Highlands Ranch man was arrested Tuesday in connection with an Aurora high-school parking lot shooting that police said grew out of a road-rage argument.
No injuries were reported.
Aurora police credited the city’s Flock camera system and license plate readers with helping them identify and locate the shooting suspect, allowing for his arrest 18 minutes after the shooting was reported in the parking lot of Rangeview High School, 17599 E. Iliff Ave.
Police were called to the school at about 3:45 p.m. on reports of gunfire with no apparent injuries.
“The investigation so far has determined two men got into an argument over an apparent road rage incident,” Aurora police spokesperson Joe Moylan said in a statement. “Both men were there to pick up students, who are family members.”
Investigators said the argument soon became a physical fight and then broke out in shooting.
“No injuries were reported during the shooting,” Moylan said. “The shooter sped from the scene.”
School resource officers at Rangeview helped determine the shooting suspect’s description and license plate number.
“Utilizing Flock automated license plate readers, city-owned cameras and drones as first responders, keen-eyed Aurora police employees assigned to the Real Time Information Center were able to locate the fleeing vehicle and relay its location to responding officers,” Moylan said.
The 35-year-old man, not identified by police Tuesday, was arrested and police said they recovered a gun.
The high school was placed on a secure perimeter for about 10 minutes, police said.
