HIGHLANDS RANCH | The Grandview girls flag football team learned some things about Mountain Vista in last season’s Class 5A state playoffs.

The Wolves put the knowledge gained from a second round postseason defeat to use Wednesday night at Canvas Credit Union Stadium at Highlands Ranch, as they dealt the Golden Eagles their first-ever defeat.

Senior Brooke Sullivan racked up 301 yards of total offense and accounted for four touchdowns and Grandview survived a late rally by Mountain Vista, which had won all 41 games (including two state championships) it played since the Colorado High School Activities Association sanctioned the sport prior to the 2024 season.

“They are really good and we just happened to play really well,” Grandview coach Mark Fisher told the Sentinel. “I head from some other coaches (after the game) and I think a lot of people were waiting for that domino to fall. It used to be Mountain Vista and then everybody else, but I now I think it makes everyone else feel like they have a chance.”

Mountain Vista won all 19 of its games in 2024 and 2025 — with help from Ariana Akey, the national player of the year, who graduated — and won its first three games this season by a combined total of 102-19.

The Wolves (5-1 and ranked No. 5 in the latest coaches poll from the Colorado High School Activities Association) came in off their only loss — a 20-13 defeat against No. 1 Legend in a game that was a one-point contest before the Titans scored in the final seconds — and were on point from the beginning.

Even without junior regular K’Dence Thomas (who was injured in the Legend game), Grandview’s offense hummed early behind Sullivan, who rushed for 158 yards and a touchdown and also passed for 143 yards and three scores.

The Wolves jumped up 13-0 in the opening quarter — which represented the first time second-ranked Mountain Vista (3-1) had trailed in a game — and upped that lead to 26-7 by halftime and crested at 33-7 after three quarters.

“We just rode the momentum,” Fisher said. “For three quarters, we played just about a perfect game.”

The game was halted due to lightning early in the fourth quarter, however, which changed the momentum and the Golden Eagles ran off 19 straight points — utilizing the “onside kick” rule to regain possession after a score — but a late defensive stop ended the contest.

“I’m so happy for our girls,” Fisher said. “That was a really fun to experience, to be the team that stopped the streak and do it at their place. Watching them celebrate and be so excited was great.”
