Boys Tennis: Prior to 5A team state final, Regis Jesuit claims four individual titles
AURORA | The big prize is still ahead for the Regis Jesuit boys tennis team, but the Raiders earned plenty of smaller ones Saturday.
On the same Denver Tennis Park courts on which it will battle Cherry Creek for the Class 5A team state championship Tuesday, Regis Jesuit won four 5A individual titles — and went 3-1 in head-to-head matches against the Bruins — and had six of seven lines come away with medals after three days of play.
Headlining the championship haul for coach Laura Jones’ Raiders was senior Alec Rodriguez-Fields, who completed his quest to win a third consecutive No. 1 singles state title with a gritty 6-4, 6-1 victory over Lakewood junior Milo Fischer, who had plenty of support in the stands for his upset bid.
Rodriguez-Fields held off Fischer’s bid to take the opening set and then rode the momentum to finish off a victory that made him the first 5A No. 1 singles player to claim three straight championships since Cherry Creek’s Chad Harris (1997-99). Harris went on to play at Vanderbilt and has been enshrined in the Colorado Tennis Hall of Fame.
Historically, Rodriguez-Fields’ achievement is more significant in terms of his own school, as he became just Regis Jesuit’s second three-time No. 1 singles state champion since Jack Cella back in 1937-39.
The victory also extended his undefeated season leading up to his final match against Cherry Creek freshman Jovian Sherrell in the team final.
Regis Jesuit claimed championships at three of the four doubles positions, as the No. 2 team of senior Koops Lord and junior Will Larkin, the No. 3 duo of senior Beckett Martorella and sophomore Daniel Hickey and the No. 4 tandem of senior Connor Hickey and sophomore Sam Meyer posted victories.
Lord and Larkin, the No. 1 doubles state champions in 2025, ruled their new position with a tidy 6-1, 6-1 victory over Cherry Creek’s Sam Migliaccio and Spencer Hutchins, who they will see again in the team final.
Another head-to-head win for the Raiders over the Bruins came from Daniel Hickey and Martorella, who took care of Cherry Creek’s Andrew Young and Sunand Bhandaram, 6-1, 6-2.
Connor Hickey and Meyer were the first to finish among the Regis Jesuit doubles state champions, as they rallied from a late deficit to take the first set from Fossil Ridge’s Will Schuster and Sully Kane before they finished off a 7-5, 6-1 victory.
Junior Marcus Magno — who sat out last season after he transferred over from Colorado Academy — came up short in his bid to win a second singles state title, as he fell to Cherry Creek senior Aidan Washer 6-2, 6-3 in the No. 2 singles title match.
The Regis Jesuit No. 1 doubles team of senior Edward Samuelson and junior Finn Carolan won the opening set of their Friday semifinal against a team from Fossil Ridge, but dropped the next two — including the second in a lengthy tiebreak — to end up on the playback side.
The duo advanced to the third-place match, where they defeated Arapahoe seniors Owen Kates and Colin Quint 6-1, 7-6 (7-3).
