THE WEEK PAST IN AURORA PREP SPORTS, 8.18-8.24.26

MONDAY, AUG. 24: The Rangeview softball team moved to 1-1 with 16-9 win at Englewood with Anabelle Velasco on the mound. The Raiders had 18 hits and Devyn Davenport, Sophie Estrada & Jimena Vasquez-Orduna drove in 2 runs apiece. …Sam Silver tied for fourth with a 2-under-par 70 and Logan Sandvik shot 72 to tie for 10th to help the Grandview boys golf team tie for fourth at the Cherry Creek Invitational played at Overland Park G.C. Cherokee Trail tied for seventh with a top result from Anthony Chen (who tied for 20th), while Regis Jesuit took 13th, Smoky Hill 16th and Eaglecrest 19th. …The Gateway boys golf team finished in third place at the Colorado League Minor tournament played at Springhill Golf Course. Cooper Nicotino finished in ninth place — following eight golfers from team winner Skyline — to pace the Olys.

SATURDAY, AUG. 22: Haisley Elliott pitched 11 innings combined for the Eaglecrest softball team in two games at the FAN/NFCA Lead Off Classic, during which the Raptors topped Mead 15-4 and lost to North Gwinnett (Georgia) 6-1. Elliott had five hits in seven at-bats between the two games and Ryleigh Stufft went a combined 4-for-7 with a double, home run and 4 RBI and Giana Vialpando Williams also knocked in four runs with a combined three hits. …Madison Lange of the Cherokee Trail girls cross country team was the winner of the Championship Division girls race at the Cheyenne Mountain Stampede on the state meet course at the Norris Penrose Event Cenver in Colorado Springs. Lange ran a time of 17 minutes, 43.10 seconds, to win comfortably and help the Cougars to sixth place among 19 scoring teams, while Regis Jesuit’s McKenna Groen came in 10th. The Eaglecrest girls ran in the Large School Division race and Jenna Winn grabbed second place individuall, while the Raptors were eighth among 23 teams. Luis Duarte of Regis Jesuit posted the Aurora area’s best individual boys finish with a 23rd-place result in the Championship Division boys race. …Rilee Bergquist threw three touchdown passes and also scored via rush and reception to help the Vista PEAK Prep girls flag football team to a 48-0 win at Aurora West College Prep Academy. Joanna Byrd caught two touchdown passes and joined Hope Lockhart and Olivia Martinez with two interceptions apiece.

FRIDAY, AUG. 21: Zero Week football wins went to Eaglecrest, Gateway and Grandview (details, here). ….The Cherokee Trail softball team swept past Columbine and Ralston Valley in a pair of games at Metro State in which pitchers Sydney Cobb and Sophia Jans yielded just one run in 10 innings. Cobb got the win in a 12-0 defeat of Ralston Valley — which saw Delaney Falzon homer and drive in three runs and Charlotte Aldridge pick up three of the Cougars’ 15 hits — while Jans tossed three scoreless innings in a 7-1 win over Columbine. Cobb did some offensive damage in that one with a triple and two RBI, while Falzon, Tayah Burton, Corrine Becker and Peyton Contes knocked in runs. …The Eaglecrest softball team took two contests in Fort Collins at the FAN/NFCA Lead Off Classic with a 17-2 win over Discovery Canyon coupled with a 10-2 victory over host Rocky Mountain. The Raptors pounded out a combined 25 hits in the two wins, while winning pitcher Alyssa Vallejos homered and drove in five runs in the victory over Discovery Canyon, which also saw Tiani Lobitos pick up four RBI. …The Smoky Hill girls flag football team split back-to-back contests with an 18-0 loss to ThunderRidge followed with a 34-0 win over Manual. …Played in extreme heat, the Tom Moore Invitational boys tennis tournament (hosted by Eaglecrest), saw Cherokee Trail and Grandview each earn 32 points to tie for second behind winner Denver East, which had 39.

THURSDAY, AUG. 20: The Aurora Central football team rolled to a 47-0 Zero Week home win over Adams City (see details, here). …In a local clash to open the season, the Regis Jesuit girls volleyball team outlasted visiting Eaglecrest 25-22, 25-23, 25-21 behind double-digit kill efforts from Tatum Phillips (12) and Chandler Lynott (11). Elizabeth Crisham contributed four aces and four blocks and Avery Kreutzer dished out 32 assists for the Raiders, who countered Taylor Slothower’s nine kills and seven from Katie Drugan. …The Vista PEAK Prep girls volleyball team dropped the first set to Prairie View, then roared to a 23-25, 25-19, 28-26, 25-17 victory. Emily Peterson had 15 kills and eight digs, Kendall Elkins dished out 19 assists and Yadira Dickey recorded 10 digs for the Bison. …The Rangeview girls volleyball team rolled past Overland 25-13, 25-4, 25-11 with help from Kamilah Vigil’s 10 kills, plus six Jocelyn Garcia service aces and 13 assists from Shayla Toler. …The Aurora Central girls volleyball team picked up a season-opening 25-12, 25-14, 25-17 sweep of Englewood. …In its first game since winning last season’s Class 5A state championship, the Regis Jesuit boys soccer team blanked visiting Pine Creek 2-0 on goals by Joe Coughlon and Bailey Ledvina. …Brandon Munoz tallied twice and Wahaj Payab also scored for the Overland boys soccer team in its 4-1 win over Aurora Science & Technology at the Aurora Sports Park. …Rooney Leon Hernandez scored a goal in both halves to help the Rangeview boys soccer team to a 2-1 victory over visiting Smoky Hill. Alexis Rojas had the goal for the Buffaloes, who got outshot 18-6. …Garrett Revercomb and Jagger Winnig accounted for the goals for the Grandview boys soccer team in its 2-0 victory over Chaparral. …The Grandview boys and girls cross country teams swept the Aurora City Championship meet at the Aurora Sports Park. The Wolves had the girls individual champion in Emerson Hensler, while Vista PEAK Prep’s Brandon Pearcy cruised to the boys crown. …A four-touchdown effort from quarterback Rilee Bergstrom (who threw two to Gabrielle Trammell and one apiece to Joanna Byrd and Kaydience Milligan) helped the Vista PEAK Prep girls flag football team to a 26-0 win against Overland. Olivia Martinez had three interceptions to help the Bison to the shutout. …Liliana Flores De Jesus racked up 165 yards and three touchdowns on the ground for the Aurora Central girls flag football team in a 38-2 victory over Bruce Randolph. Bella Briggs also got into the end zone for the Trojans. …The Centennial League boys golf tournament at South Suburban G.C. saw Grandview’s Sam Silver and Cherokee Trail’s Jack Brenning each shoot 2-under-par 70s to tied for second place individually and lead locals. Brenning was joined by Anthony and Jeffrey Chen (who both tied for seventh after they shot plus-1 73) to help the Cougars finish second in the team chase. Smoky Hill’s Reece Nuwash tied for fifth place with an even-par 72.

WEDNESDAY, AUG. 19: The Eaglecrest softball team opened the season with a decisive 14-2 home win over ThunderRidge that saw Haisley Elliott pitch two perfect innings and also drive in a pair of runs. Giana Vialpando Williams and Ryleigh Stufft each had a triple among two hits and both knocked in a pair of runs for the Raptors. …Kailee Deulee went 4-for-4 and had a fourth of the Grandview softball team’s total of 16 hits in a 9-4 road win over Castle View. Lily Jackson and Ally Birx had 2 RBI apiece for the Wolves, who had six players knocked in at least one. …The Grandview girls flag football team picked off five passes and scored double digit points in each of the first three quarters in a 57-0 win over Rangeview in a local matchup at Legacy Stadium. Brooke Sullivan’s four-touchdown output led the way for the Wolves, who got rushing touchdowns from Solvie Youde, Meta Wa Kalonji, Kate Mellinger and Stella Anderson, while Kendall Tracy, Aniya Coleman and K’Dence Thomas caught scoring strikes. …Despite two touchdown passes from Helen Hutchinson (to Sophia Salas and Annabelle Colunga), the Cherokee Trail girls flag football team fell to Denver East 19-12. …Celie Dengler amassed 230 yards passing and connected with Kaitlyn Buhler on two scoring passes, but the Regis Jesuit girls flag football team dropped a 26-13 road contest to Chatfield.

TUESDAY, AUG. 18: The Grandview softball team scored in five of its six at-bats in an 11-4 home win over Elizabeth behind a big game from Christi Birx, who allowed two earned runs in seven innings, hit a home run and drove in four runs. Ally Birx added three hits and a homer, while Lily Jackson and Peyton Rasmussen had two hits and two RBI apiece. …Nikiah Light and Jade Ross pounded out four hits apiece for the Smoky Hill softball team, which rallied from an eight-run deficit in the third inning for a 10-8 walk-off win over visiting Lakewood. Winning pitcher Ava Matheny helped herself with three RBI, while Trea Robinson plated a pair of runs. …Brooke Sullivan had a 100 yards of total offense and two touchdowns to help the Grandview girls flag football team blank Legacy 33-0. K’Dence Thomas also threw a TD pass, while Kendall Tracy and Delaina Burgeson caught scoring passes for the Wolves. …Rilee Bergquist threw a touchdown pass to Olivia Martinez and also scored a rushing touchdown late to rally the Vista PEAK Prep girls flag football team to a 13-12 road win over Columbine. …The Aurora Central girls flag football team rode a big performance from Yasmin Castillo (110 yards rushing, 2 touchdowns) to an 18-12 win over Wheat Ridge. …The Vista PEAK Prep boys tennis team edged Northglenn 4-3 to open the season. ...Regis Jesuit’s Will Farber carded a 4-under-par 68 to share medalist honors with Castle View’s Kai Jorde at the second Continental League boys golf tournament of the season, which was played at Heritage Eagle Bend. Henry Criste shot 78 and Parker Hutchinson 79 to make the top 20 for the Raiders, who finished a stroke behind the SaberCats for first place in the team standings.
