A recent investigative report by Colorado Public Radio exposed alarming details about what appears to be the Trump administration\u2019s latest immigration scheme to contrive a policy targeting parentless children for deportation while pretending to protect them.<\/p>\n

The facts uncovered by CPR<\/em> are impossible to ignore. Federal agents from agencies including ICE, the FBI and the DEA have spent weeks attempting to locate immigrant children and young adults who entered the United States as unaccompanied minors. Many of these children were victims of human traffickers, either in their home nation, en route or even here, according to the story by CPR reporter Allison Sherry, and Associated Press reporting.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The CPR investigation found that many of these youths have been under extensive supervision through foster care systems, county caseworkers, guardians ad litem, immigration attorneys and state-approved service providers.<\/p>\n

Yet federal authorities still deployed armed agents to conduct home visits and build a database of the juveniles\u2019 locations.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

The reality of the scheme was made apparent by the ICE directive obtained by CPR. The document describes unaccompanied minors as \u201ctargets,\u201d prioritizes individuals with removal orders, and explicitly discusses enforcement and deportation actions.<\/p>\n

While federal officials said the dragnet was about child safety, the agency\u2019s own planning documents indicate that immigration enforcement was central to the operation.<\/p>\n

That distinction is striking.<\/p>\n

If the government\u2019s top concern was child welfare, it would have worked through the extensive networks already responsible for protecting these vulnerable young people. Instead, agents appeared at homes, sought school information, and attempted to gather data on children and young adults who, in many cases, had legal status, asylum protections, special juvenile visas or pending cases.<\/p>\n

The federal agents, under orders of the Trump administration, are creating fear, not trust.<\/p>\n

While the stalking and harassment have occurred statewide, as many as 133 children have been placed into homes through the Arapahoe County social services system. Aurora is home to one of the state\u2019s largest immigrant populations and has long served as a destination for refugee and immigrant families seeking safety and opportunity. Any campaign that casts a broad net over immigrant youth inevitably reverberates throughout Aurora\u2019s schools, neighborhoods and community organizations. The effects extend far beyond the individuals directly contacted by federal agents.<\/p>\n

Fear spreads quickly through families and classrooms. A child who hears that immigration agents are knocking on doors may avoid school. Parents become reluctant to engage with teachers, counselors or even local police. Friends and classmates of targeted youths absorb the same anxiety. Communities that already face language barriers, economic challenges and the stresses of migration are pushed further into distrust and isolation.<\/p>\n

This is not just an immigration issue. It is an educational issue, a public health issue and, above all, a child welfare issue.<\/p>\n

Officials from Aurora, its counties, legislative districts and those in Congress and others across the state should object and intervene.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The state, through its counties, has long been responsible for coordinating social services and child protection programs. That responsibility should include active efforts to safeguard vulnerable immigrant children from intimidation and nefarious enforcement tactics. State officials, county governments and child welfare agencies should work together to ensure that children under their supervision are protected, informed of their rights and able to continue their education and development without fear.<\/p>\n

This isn\u2019t about obstructing legitimate law enforcement. Humanitarian and ethical principles require government institutions to place child welfare above political theater.<\/p>\n

This recent controversy points to the larger failure of America\u2019s broken immigration system.<\/p>\n

Congress bears substantial responsibility. For decades, lawmakers of both parties have failed to address structural deficiencies that have produced recurring crises at the border, backlogged immigration courts and inconsistent policies governing vulnerable children. Those failures have left millions of people, communities and public institutions trapped in uncertainty.<\/p>\n

At the same time, Congress has too often proven unwilling or unable to defend its constitutional role in setting immigration policy and law. The result is a system increasingly shaped by executive action rather than practical, durable legislation.<\/p>\n

The quagmire has resulted in decades of humanitarian disasters linked to the American government, however, stalking children is beyond the pale.<\/p>\n

Children in need of safety can\u2019t become pawns in a political agenda. Colorado, and the nation, must demand better, now.<\/p>\n
