{"id":2018,"date":"2026-06-08T12:03:58","date_gmt":"2026-06-08T12:03:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/denvermovingchronicle.com\/?p=2018"},"modified":"2026-06-08T12:03:58","modified_gmt":"2026-06-08T12:03:58","slug":"the-tony-awards-hosted-by-pink-feature-wins-by-john-lithgow-and-liberation-play","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/denvermovingchronicle.com\/?p=2018","title":{"rendered":"The Tony Awards, hosted by Pink, feature wins by John Lithgow and \u2018Liberation\u2019 play"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<ul><\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong>NEW YORK <\/strong>|  The prize for the best new play at the Tony Awards on Sunday went to \u201cLiberation,\u201d about a consciousness-raising women\u2019s group in 1970s Ohio, which earlier this year also won the Pulitzer Prize for drama.<\/p>\n<p>Bess Wohl\u2019s memory play collects stories from second-wave feminists from all walks of life as they tackle misogyny, internalized homophobia, racism, domestic abuse and traditional gender roles. Wohl is only the fourth woman to win a best play Tony, joining Wendy Wasserstein, Yasmina Reza and Frances Goodrich.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is the honor of a lifetime,\u201d said Wohl, who thanked her mom, daughters and female producers. \u201cIt has been almost 40 years since an American woman won this award. Tonight I want to honor her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLiberation\u201d joins a list of 18 plays that have won the Pulitzer Prize for drama and the Tony Award in the same year, which includes \u201cDeath of a Salesman,\u201d a well-received revival this year.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>John Lithgow took home the first award for \u201cGiant.\u201d A blockbuster revival of \u201cDeath of a Salesman\u201d was racking up awards even before the halfway mark.<\/p>\n<p>Lithgow won best lead actor in a play as children\u2019s author Roald Dahl in Mark Rosenblatt\u2019s production set in 1983, when the author is facing intense backlash for his antisemitic comments. The role earned Lithgow his first Olivier Award in London and now the Tony for lead actor in a play, his third.<\/p>\n<p>The win puts Lithgow in an exclusive group of actors who have won in three separate acting categories. He previously won featured actor in a play for \u201cThe Changing Room\u201d and lead actor in a musical for \u201cSweet Smell of Success.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTwo Tony bookends with 53 years between them,\u201d he said. \u201cIn those years, I have worked with hundreds of just fantastic theater artists. I\u2019ve had dozens and dozens of ecstatic moments on the stage, but I have to tell you right now, this moment has got to be one of the best.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A revival of \u201cDeath of a Salesman\u201d won at least five Tonys. \u201cRoseanne\u201d star Laurie Metcalf won her third Tony for playing Willy Loman\u2019s wife opposite Nathan Lane in the revival, which also won for lighting, scenic design and sound design. Joe Mantello won best director for a play.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCats: The Jellicle Ball,\u201d which reimagines the 1980s classic feline musical as a celebration of queer ballroom culture, won for best direction of a musical by Zhailon Levingston and Bill Rauch.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe honor the Black and brown trans women and gay men who were ballroom\u2019s pioneers, as well as today\u2019s icons, and our cast of astonishing triple-threats, including people from their 20s to their 80s, and every decade in between,\u201d Levingston said.<\/p>\n<p>What was Pink\u2019s opening number like?<\/p>\n<p>Pink started the show spinning and then dangling uncomfortably from a harness over the stage, dressed like Peter Pan. Former host Neil Patrick Harris stepped in to suggest the first-time host just be herself. \u201cYou\u2019re Pink, Pink. You can do anything,\u201d he told her.<\/p>\n<p>After lifting Harris off the stage with her legs, Pink relented to his suggestion of being \u201cless Pan-ish\u201d by taking off her harness, adding a top hat and leading an extended \u201cLady Marmalade\u201d that included contributions from dozens of performers including Lea Michele and Megan Thee Stallion \u2014 plus some strange, new lyrics like \u201cGitchie, gitchie, Laurie Metcalf\u201d \u2014 and ended with some 170 performers on stage and crowding the aisles.<\/p>\n<p>In her opening remarks, Pink, who has not yet gotten a Broadway credit, called herself theater\u2019s second-biggest fan after her teenage daughter, Willow. \u201cI\u2019m not here just to steal peoples\u2019 wigs, although I will be doing that. I\u2019m here to celebrate the hardest-working people in show business,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSchmigadoon!\u201d and \u201cDeath of a Salesman\u201d each went into the main telecast with a lead of three Tonys after a pre-show on Pluto TV hosted by Laura Benanti and Tituss Burgess that announced the more technical awards. Qween Jean became the first openly trans Tony winner ever for making the costumes for \u201cCats: The Jellicle Ball.\u201d Kai Harada, nominated twice for the sound design of a musical, didn\u2019t initially know which one he had won for until told onstage \u2014 \u201cRagtime.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Twenty-four Broadway shows are hoping to nab at least one win Sunday across the 26 Tony categories, which can mean the difference between keeping the doors open and pulling down the curtain.<\/p>\n<p>Plenty of performances<\/p>\n<p>There will be performances from the seven best new musical and best musical revival nominees: \u201cThe Lost Boys,\u201d \u201cSchmigadoon!,\u201d \u201cTitanique,\u201d \u201cTwo Strangers (Carry a Cake Across New York),\u201d \u201cCats: The Jellicle Ball,\u201d \u201cRagtime\u201d and \u201cThe Rocky Horror Show.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Other performances include the original lead cast members of \u201cThe Book of Mormon\u201d \u2014 Josh Gad, Andrew Rannells, Rory O\u2019Malley and Nikki M. James \u2014 this year celebrating its 15th anniversary. Leslie Odom, Jr. will sing \u201cWithout You\u201d from \u201cRent\u201d during the In Memoriam section, in honor of that show\u2019s 30th anniversary.<\/p>\n<p>Another show celebrating a milestone, \u201cChicago\u201d now at 30, will have a performance slot featuring Pink, as well as Queen Latifah, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Alex Newell, Adrienne Warren, Julianne Hough, Whitney Leavitt and Dylan Mulvaney.
