He was going to be \u201cthe fifth cowboy to the right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey said: Just make sure you\u2019re the most honest, unique fifth cowboy right that anyone\u2019s ever seen,\u201d Dern recalls.<\/p>\n<p>Dern had to play the long game. But for the actor, an avid marathon runner who used to jog from his Malibu home to set, acting has always been an endurance sport.<\/p>\n<p>Dern, who turns 90 next month, came to the Cannes Film Festival this week to take a well-deserved bow.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>\u201cDernsie: The Amazing Life of Bruce Dern,\u201d a documentary about his long-distance career, premiered on Thursday at the festival.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI see a journey, a long uninterrupted journey,\u201d Dern said in an interview alongside his daughter, Laura. \u201cA bunch of folks got together and said: \u2018Bruce Dern could play.\u2019 That\u2019s all I wanted.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cannes, like most things for Dern, holds plenty of stories. He first came here, he says, with Alfred Hitchcock for \u201cMarnie.\u201d In 2013, he won best actor in Cannes for one of his few leading performances, in \u201cNebraska,\u201d directed by Alexander Payne.<\/p>\n<p>Along the way, Laura Dern has often been there. As a child, Hitchcock gave her a mini director\u2019s chair to sit in. On \u201cNebraska,\u201d Laura \u2014 who starred in Payne\u2019s first feature, \u201cCitizen Ruth\u201d \u2014 for a week rode in the trailing van with Payne. She\u2019s currently in the south of France to shoot the fourth season of \u201cThe White Lotus,\u201d but she was eager to join for her dad\u2019s moment in Cannes and help him down the red carpet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat I loved about witnessing dad\u2019s career is when I was a little kid, people would come up to me and say, \u2018Boy, do I love to hate your dad,&#8217;\u201d she said. \u201cThat was a common quote, which meant they had fallen in love with this character even though he shot John Wayne or the various things he was up to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBlew up the Super Bowl,\u201d says her father, grinning.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A character actor villain<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Dern has done some terrible things on screen. He\u2019s hit Barbara Stanwyck (\u201cThe Big Valley\u201d). He\u2019s lynched Clint Eastwood (\u201cHang \u2018Em High\u201d). He killed John Wayne (\u201cThe Cowboys\u201d), an offense some never forgave him for.<\/p>\n<p>In 1977\u2019s \u201cBlack Sunday,\u201d Dern played a disturbed Vietnam veteran pilot who tries to blow up the Super Bowl with a blimp full of explosives. Such exploits, and the live-wire intensity that Dern brought to them, made him idolized by filmmakers like Quentin Tarantino. In the documentary, he calls Dern \u201cone of the finest and most entertaining examples of great American acting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That unpredictability also makes Dern a hold-onto-your-seat interview. He has stories to tell, and likes telling them. Tangents come like haymakers. That made for a particular challenge for \u201cDernsie\u201d director Mike Mendez. He and Dern began just talking over breakfasts at IHOP. For the documentary, he tried to recreate that experience while vainly attempting to keep Dern on subject.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI would try,\u201d sighs Mendez. \u201cBut as anybody who\u2019s ever spoken to him or interviewed him, he\u2019s like a wild bull. You can feed him a question and his mind is just going to go wherever it\u2019s going to go.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Talking in Cannes, Dern\u2019s free-flowing topics included Hitchcock\u2019s treatment of Tippi Hedren, his friendship with Jack Nicholson (\u201cHe was ahead of us all\u201d), what Stanwyck said to him after slapping him (\u201cShe said, \u2018I\u2019m not going to even ask you if I hurt you&#8217;\u201d), a jogging route to Santa Barbara and a near word-for-word recital of the climactic scene of \u201cNebraska.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Improvising the \u2018Dernsies\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>But a through line to \u201cDernsie\u201d is its title\u2019s meaning. Throughout his career, Dern was known for his off-the-cuff improvisations that jolted scenes into life. The term he credits to Nicholson, who liked a finger snap Dern added during the making of Nicholson\u2019s 1971 film, \u201cDrive, He Said.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said, \u2018I want to say something. That little snap of the fingers that he just did? He\u2019s been doing that s\u2014 for 10 years and no one ever gave him a chance to film that. That\u2019s a Dernsie,\u201d Dern says.<\/p>\n<p>During a scene with Brad Pitt in \u201cOnce Upon a Time \u2026 in Hollywood,\u201d Dern added a line \u2014 \u201cYou did something today that really touched me. You came to see me\u201d \u2014 that he says came out of how he felt to be a part of the movie.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd afterward Brad had tears in his eyes and picked me up like a little baby and carried me around the set,\u201d says Dern, laughing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t rehearse it,\u2019 he explains. \u201cOnce the switch is on, you\u2019re going. The Dernsies, I don\u2019t know what they\u2019re going to be. I take from everything that\u2019s going on around, even if it has nothing to do with it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>These aren\u2019t just the reminiscences of a retired actor, either. Dern still very much has the mindset of a working actor. He plans to keep going until he drops. It\u2019s an attitude that Laura\u2019s mother, Diane Ladd, who died last year, also shared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe read so much about longevity,\u201d she says. \u201cNow the studies are showing that a purpose driven life, more than a Mediterranean diet, more than all the different things people debate, is in fact the greatest act of longevity. My parents both said to me that they would act until they go. My dad is determined to be a lifelong artist.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Aside from this accolade for \u201cNebraska\u201d in Cannes, Dern has been nominated twice for an Academy Award.
