Her breakthrough role in \u201cIt Follows\u201d premiered in Cannes\u2019 Critics Week sidebar in 2014.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was a newbie,\u201d recalls Monroe. \u201cI\u2019m pretty sure I spent my 21st birthday here. I was like: \u2018Well isn\u2019t that exciting, to turn 21 in a country where I could have drank in for years.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt Follows,\u201d about a sexually transmitted curse, was part of a new wave of probing, atmospheric horror films. But then, it was a small $1.3 million indie movie that had little reason to expect a Cannes launch.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was surreal. You never expect going into making a film that this will happen,\u201d Monroe said in an interview on the rooftop of Cannes\u2019 Palais des Festivals. \u201cBut especially for that film. It was such a tiny, indie horror film. At that point, there really wasn\u2019t genre at this festival.\u201d<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>That has changed, though. Horror, science fiction and even slasher films have increasingly shown up in Cannes. This year, that included Jane Schoenbrun\u2019s \u201cTeenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma,\u201d the Korean monster-sci-fi-mashup \u201cHope\u201d and the gothic thriller \u201cVictorian Psycho,\u201d starring Monroe as an unhinged governess.<\/p>\n<p>On the surface, \u201cVictorian Psycho,\u201d which premiered Thursday in Cannes\u2019 Un Certain Regard section, appears to extend Monroe\u2019s reputation as the preeminent \u201cScream Queen\u201d of her generation. Along with \u201cIt Follows,\u201d she\u2019s been at the center of horror films like 2022\u2019s \u201cWatcher\u201d and 2024\u2019s \u201cLonglegs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But Monroe\u2019s range as an actor far exceeds any neat genre identification. She brought Hitchcockian depth to \u201cWatcher\u201d and psychological intensity to \u201cLonglegs.\u201d Bodies get bloody in \u201cVictorian Psycho,\u201d too, but Monroe\u2019s deranged protagonist is archly hysterical. She\u2019s a hoot.<\/p>\n<p>As much as Monroe may be associated with horror, she might be even better at comedy. In the gleefully morbid \u201cVictorian Psycho,\u201d she finally turns the tables. After years spent fleeing serial killers and worse, Monroe is on the offensive.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t know if I could pull it off. I decided to take the leap,\u201d Monroe says. \u201cMan, it was just so much fun. There\u2019s so much freedom in this role. It will definitely be the character I\u2019ll miss the most.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In Zachary Wigon\u2019s \u201cVictorian Psycho,\u201d which Bleecker Street will release Sept. 25 in theaters, Monroe plays Winifred Notty. In the 1850s, she arrives at the Ensor House, the grand manor of the Pounds family, to serve as the eager governess to two children.<\/p>\n<p>It doesn\u2019t take long for the children to realize she has a screw loose. But Winifred is comically chipper, even when deranged and over the top. As distant as the part might be from Monroe \u2014 a Santa Barbara, California, native here doing a British accent for the first time \u2014 it\u2019s the first role to really capture Monroe\u2019s natural comic energy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve never done anything remotely close to a role like this,\u201d Monroe says. \u201cI\u2019m usually more introverted and internal with my roles, and this is very outward.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Almost always in \u201cVictorian Psycho,\u201d Winifred is grinning. That came from one of Monroe\u2019s heroes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne of my favorite actors is Jack Nicholson. I think every project he does he\u2019s fascinating,\u201d Monroe says. \u201cOf course in \u2018The Shining,\u2019 he\u2019s pretty much smiling through the whole thing, through all the pain and the anguish. That was a huge influence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Monroe is also a professed fan of Olivia Colman\u2019s. And it\u2019s easy to see how wildly mischievous characters, like those often played by Colman or Nicholson, might be even more in Monroe\u2019s wheelhouse than horror. It\u2019s enough to make you wonder: does she ever chafe at the term \u201cScream Queen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome of the films I\u2019m most proud of are in this space of genre,\u201d she says. \u201cI can\u2019t be mad at it. I\u2019m so proud of \u2018It Follows,\u2019 \u2018Longlegs,\u2019 \u2018Watcher.\u2019 So, what can you do?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But if a certain side of Monroe has been rarely seen on screen, \u201cVictorian Psycho\u201d lets it out.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the Victorian era, there was suppression. In this industry, I can find that I need to present a certain way or come across a certain way,\u201d Monroe says. \u201cYou have to suppress certain things and not say certain things.
