She prefers to be quiet and calm, and often her screen presence radiates intensity when she\u2019s simply watching. But when she explodes \u2014 whether in grief or karaoke \u2014 she can be magnificent.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not something that I like to do, particularly,\u201d H\u00fcller says, sitting in a garden in Cannes. \u201cMaybe I like the characters more who don\u2019t erupt all the time because these are very annoying people, I don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>She takes a drag on a cigarette and considers it further.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI like to observe more than I like being observed. When I do something big, of course I\u2019m the center of attention. Maybe that\u2019s the root of it. But you are not my therapist so we will not find out today,\u201d H\u00fcller says, and laughs.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>The full range of H\u00fcller\u2019s talent is on full display this year in four films that run from big to small. Foremost among them is \u201cFatherland,\u201d the Cannes Film Festival entry by Pawe\u0142 Pawlikowski, the Polish director of \u201cIda\u201d and \u201cCold War.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the first week of Cannes, \u201cFatherland\u201d (which Mubi will release later this year) was widely acknowledged as a clear standout, and a possible Palme d\u2019Or favorite. Like \u201cIda\u201d and \u201cCold War,\u201d it\u2019s elegantly shot in black and white, uncommonly brief (82 minutes) and throbs with the pain of postwar Europe.<\/p>\n<p>H\u00fcller plays Erika, the daughter of the German author Thomas Mann (Hanns Zischler). They return to Germany in 1949 on a road trip, toggling between the American-controlled West Germany and the Soviet-ruled East Germany. Their former country no more, they are betwixt, as Thomas says, \u201cMickey Mouse or Stalin.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For H\u00fcller, who was born in East Germany, \u201cFatherland\u201d follows her chilling turn in Jonathan Glazer\u2019s \u201cThe Zone of Interest,\u201d set near a concentration camp. In \u201cFatherland,\u201d her character was staunchly opposed to the Nazis, but is now living amid their blithely unremorseful collaborators.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA void is hard to portray, and I think it\u2019s a big deal trying it,\u201d says H\u00fcller. \u201cWe talked about this in school. It\u2019s part of our history classes. But I never got into the specifics of what it felt like. We know a lot of pictures of the women cleaning up the streets because the men were dead or somewhere in prison. But what it meant to not know the country you were born in anymore is something we weren\u2019t familiar with.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>A streak of standouts<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Several of H\u00fcller\u2019s performances have already been indelible parts of the Cannes Film Festival: the 2016 comedy \u201cToni Erdmann\u201d and the 2023 Palme d\u2019Or winner \u201cAnatomy of a Fall.\u201d \u201cFatherland\u201d is likewise a standout, but it comes during the kind of year actors dream of.<\/p>\n<p>At the Berlin Film Festival earlier this year, H\u00fcller won best leading performance for \u201cRose,\u201d a gender exploration set in the aftermath of the Thirty Years\u2019 War. In the March box-office hit \u201cProject Hail Mary,\u201d she co-starred alongside Ryan Gosling and, at Gosling\u2019s urging, performed one of the movie\u2019s best scenes: a karaoke rendition of Harry Styles\u2019 \u201cSign of the Times.\u201d She also co-stars in Alejandro G. I\u00f1\u00e1rritu\u2019s much-anticipated \u201cDigger,\u201d due out later this year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m almost 50 now and I feel very blessed that I can have this experience right now,\u201d H\u00fcller says. \u201cFor some of my peers, it\u2019s a gap in the journey or the end of the journey.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If her character in \u201cFatherland\u201d is torn between worlds, H\u00fcller is moving frictionless between the movie realms of Europe and Hollywood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve been looking at the things that came my way and I have been thinking about whether I can say yes to them or not, if I\u2019m ready to do them,\u201d she says. \u201cThere are some experiences coming my way that I\u2019ve never had before and I would be very, very stupid if I wouldn\u2019t use them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot so much for success reasons,\u201d she continues. \u201cIt\u2019s really more of a question of growth \u2014 and getting to know more spaces so you can move more freely through the world. There\u2019s a lot of pleasure in this. It\u2019s also dangerous. But it\u2019s far out of my comfort zone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Expanding the frame<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Still, success has come with a cost. H\u00fcller considers herself a theater actor first, and is desperate to return to the theater collective she grew out of. She still directs with them, but her notoriety is too much to be part of an ensemble.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI miss theater like a heartbroken person,\u201d she says, her eyes welling up. \u201cEven when I talk about it with you, I start crying.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As pared away as Pawlikowski\u2019s films are, he occasionally adds things, too. During filming, he had an idea for a scene where Erika, after quietly growing skeptical of her father\u2019s optimism about a good Germany, shouts at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI said, \u2018Listen, if it\u2019s bad, I\u2019m not going to put it in, just do your best.\u2019 And she did brilliant,\u201d Pawlikowski says. \u201cThat was the luxury of an actress who can do so much. I was just watching, like, how did she do this? It\u2019s so much better than what I imagined.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>H\u00fcller didn\u2019t expect Pawlikowski\u2019s style to change her methods, but it did. Pawlikowski\u2019s frames leave a lot of space. She had to find how to exist in them without becoming a statue.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt has a lot to do with presence and awareness and focus, and with a rich inner movement that\u2019s not necessarily seen on the outside,\u201d says H\u00fcller. \u201cBut you can feel it, in some way. The more precise this inner movement is, the better it works in that very precise frame.
